Which character are you?

As writers, we’re all biased to certain characters we write. Perhaps it’s your hero. Perhaps it’s a super fun, flawed villain. Perhaps it’s a wise secondary character whom the lead relies on. We all put ourselves in one of their shoes more than the other.

When I write, the hardest thing is dialogue. I have a hard time framing words and sentences in different tones, dialect and knowledge that a character may have. So I find it much easier to write the dialogue for one character, primarily. She’s my heroine.

What are your tips for writing from different perspectives? What character do you play the most in your head as you write?

I wonder if JK Rowling was more like Harry or perhaps Hermione. Ian Fleming was certainly Bond. But Shakespeare? Less evident. By embodying a character more than another, does that make you a less true writer, or does that make you human?
